Inputs are the experiment identifier, the protocol version actually used, and the files that support the conclusion. Do not treat a saved page as a closed experiment. One Experiment Is Not Closed Until These Fields Exist

The search is electronic lab notebook record checklist. Drop the product brochure. Public template guidance on this site already lists a useful minimum: objective, author, date, project, sample or construct identifiers, method or protocol version, observations, deviations, evidence, conclusion, and next step. This page turns that list into an ordered close-out. It does not choose a template. It does not claim that software completes 21 CFR Part 11. Steps: Close One ELN Entry

1. Write the experiment identifier, the date, the author, and the project in fields a second person can search. Checkpoint: the title is not “Tuesday gel.”
2. State the objective in one sentence that names the decision this run was supposed to support. Checkpoint: a reviewer can say what “pass” would have meant before seeing the result.
3. Name the protocol or method version actually used, not the folder nickname. If the run departed from that version, do not fix it later. Checkpoint: the version ID resolves to a readable method.
4. List materials as identifiers: construct or sample ID, reagent lot where it matters, and the instrument method if a cycler or sequencer was used. Checkpoint: a later person can find the same physical objects.
5. Record observations and any deviation in the same entry. A deviation that lives only in chat is not on the record. Checkpoint: every change from the named protocol has a sentence.
6. Attach or link the evidence that supports the conclusion: raw files, a gel with a lane map, a chromatogram, or a counted table. A conclusion without an inspectable file is a claim. Checkpoint: each conclusion sentence points to a file or a named observation.
7. Write the conclusion and the next step, including “repeat” or “stop” when that is the honest outcome. Checkpoint: the next person knows whether this entry is a pass, a fail, or an incomplete run.

Expected Result

A second person can open the entry and recover identifier, objective, protocol version, materials, deviations, evidence, conclusion, and next step without asking the author. Saving the page is not verification. Signing a still-empty record is not verification. Software that stores the entry does not make the laboratory compliant with 21 CFR Part 11.

Verification

Read the entry as if the author had left. If any of the seven fields is a placeholder, the experiment is not closed. If review is required, stop here and open the sign-off checklist; this page does not collect signatures. Common Failure Modes

The usual fail is a conclusion pasted onto a gel file with no protocol version. The second fail is a deviation written after the conclusion so the record looks clean. The third fail is a next-step field that says “see Slack.” Prefer a short complete entry over a long template that nobody filled.
