Academic ELN Licenses: What the Seat Actually Includes
Scope of an academic ELN license is a list of included and withheld lines, not a cheaper campus SKU. A free tier, a per-user academic seat, a classroom term, and a campus Enterprise unit buy different notebooks, storage, add-ons, and identity controls. A Campus Price Is Not a Complete ELN
The seed question is "What does an academic ELN license actually buy?" Keep that wording. The answer is a named unit, not every module on the demo. Prefer a deal that writes down notebooks, storage, inventory, and SSO. Reject the assumption that a campus sticker includes the inventory application, single sign-on, extra storage, and onboarding because a salesperson walked through them. Those lines are often a bundle, an Enterprise row, or a services statement of work.
LabArchives official pricing, observed 4 September 2026, is a worked example — one vendor's public card, not a market average and not a rank. Academic pricing on that page is available to academic, government, and non-profit organizations. Professional is listed at $330 academic and $575 corporate per user per year. That split is eligibility language. It is not the subject of this page. The subject is what the academic seat includes after you already know it is academic.

The research-plan help article adds mechanics the pricing tile compresses: Professional allows unlimited owned notebooks and up to 100GB per seat, pooled when several seats sit under one owner. Free starts as a capped account you later upgrade. Education plans list $25 per student per term on the student-paid path, with instructor and TA accounts free. That is a classroom term. It is not a research seat wearing a smaller number.
What the Sticker Still Withholds
A PI converting a campus deal into a lab rollout should write the withheld lines before anyone migrates notebooks. Inventory on the LabArchives card is a bundle or a separate product, including a $99 academic inventory line and a 90-day inventory trial — not an invisible part of every ELN seat. SSO, developer API, SLA, and a dedicated success manager sit on Enterprise in the public comparison. Storage overage is a later conversation: the help text says you upgrade or request more storage. Implementation time, training, and data migration do not appear as included sentences on the Professional tile. They are still real work. Vendor comparison tables may list "Witness and Review (21 CFR Part 11)" as a feature row. Treat that as a vendor claim about a feature family. It is not a certificate that the academic license completed Part 11 for the laboratory. Software features can support documentation and access control. They do not make the lab compliant.
