ELN replacement after leaving eLabJournal is a reconstruction problem, not a prettier-notebook contest. Leave only when a successor can accept a usable export, keep signed review state readable, and map the permission model the lab actually uses. Rank brands later. The alternatives shortlist and the SciNote versus eLabJournal pair already own those jobs.
Leave Only When Review and Export Still Work

The search is how to choose the next system after a named exit. The subject is the category: the next electronic lab notebook. eLabJournal is the system you are leaving, not the trophy on a 2026 list. A demo that cannot reconstruct who signed a real experiment is not a successor. It is a new notebook with an old ZIP sitting in Downloads.
Campus-hosted eLabJournal documentation still describes project export as PDF, HTML, JSON, or XML. That list is the start of the scorecard. It is not proof that any later vendor can ingest the file, keep the witness line, or honor the same reviewer role. The same help page says generated export files are removed within 48 hours. A cutover that assumes the ZIP will wait in the vendor’s download tray for a week is already a failed exit. Software features can support documentation and access control. They do not complete 21 CFR Part 11 by themselves.
Score Export, Review State, and Permission Parity
The eLabJournal project-export help says a project ZIP can include the studies and experiments in that project plus linked data files. Generated export files are removed from the system within 48 hours. If the lab cannot produce that ZIP on demand, do not schedule a cutover. Produce one signed experiment first. Then ask the successor three questions that change the shortlist.
| Check | What to ask | Fail signal |
| Export reconstruction | Can the successor ingest the JSON or XML the lab can actually export, or only display a PDF? | The vendor wants a screenshot tour and will “map fields later.” |
| Review-state survival | After import or archive, can a reviewer still see who approved what, and when? | The experiment body arrives; the signature line does not. |
| Permission parity | Do witness, reviewer, and read-only roles map, or does every imported record become editable? | The new ACL is “the whole lab can edit.” |
Sapio’s migration note treats the move as a validation program: record counts, file integrity, link preservation, then sample-based checks that automation misses. Use that bar on one experiment before you believe a field map. A parsed title is not a reconstructed approval. If the lab works under Part 11, GLP, or a sponsor audit, write the reconstruction test into the pilot. Do not treat a compliance logo on a pricing page as the test.
Three Exit Postures, Same Labels
This is not a rematch of SciNote against eLabJournal. The options are exit postures. SciSure’s own from-another-ELN guide already splits work into migrate as structured data, archive as a preserved record, or rebuild as a better template, and it tells labs to keep the old system until retention and retrieval still work. Score the three postures on the same labels.
| Dimension | Structured-import successor | Archive-and-rebuild successor | Dual-run with read-only legacy |
| Export reconstruction | Aims to ingest JSON, XML, or API-shaped records | PDF or HTML ZIP is enough if it is treated as archive | Legacy remains the system of record for old experiments |
| Review-state survival | Must be proven on a signed record; ingest does not imply it | Old signatures stay on the archived object | Old reviews stay in eLabJournal; new reviews start in the successor |
| Permission parity | Roles must map; an open-edit import is not parity | New roles are designed; old ACLs stay on the archive | Lock the legacy to read-only after cutover |
| When it fits | The lab can export structured files and will test one signed experiment | Active protocols are few; historical volume is large | No successor has proven reconstruction this quarter |
| What it does not buy | Not automatic Part 11 completion | Not a lossless move of every old field | Not a completed migration |
Prefer structured import when queryable fields must survive and the vendor will ingest the ZIP you can produce this week. Prefer archive-and-rebuild when live work is a small template set and the old book is mainly an archive. SciSure warns that full-fidelity recreation of every old field can take months and still rebuild a messy workflow. Prefer dual-run when reconstruction is unproven. An editable legacy is not an archive. Name an owner for export, identity, and the day the old tenant actually closes. Brand continuity after the eLabNext / SciSure merger is a procurement question for the alternatives or pair pages. It does not replace the three parity checks on this page. If the successor cannot reconstruct a signed record, a new logo on the old tenant does not fix the exit.
Ask for a Reconstruction Pilot, Not a Feature Tour
Pick one signed experiment that a reviewer still cares about. Export it. Time the 48-hour download window. Hand the ZIP to the successor. Ask them to reconstruct the body, the attachments, and the approval line in front of you. Count records. Open two links. Read the ACL. If that pilot fails, you do not have a next system. You have a brochure.
Only after those checks should a named product enter the scorecard. ZettaNote is Zettalab’s electronic laboratory notebook for structured experiment documentation. It is one record system to score against export, review, and permission — not the winner of an eLabJournal exit. If you still need a brand shortlist after the posture is named, open the alternatives page. If you still need the SciNote pair, open that page. The review-workflow selection page in this series will own signer states and rejection loops. This page only decides whether you are allowed to leave.
Frequently Asked Questions
What export formats can eLabJournal actually produce?
Campus-hosted project-export help lists PDF, HTML, JSON, or XML, packed as a ZIP that includes studies, experiments, and linked files. Generated files are removed after 48 hours. A format list is not proof the successor can ingest the ZIP or keep a signature.
Does switching ELN software complete 21 CFR Part 11?
No. Features can support documentation, audit trails, and access control. They do not make a laboratory compliant by themselves. Write the reconstruction test into the pilot; do not treat a logo as the test.
